Will the Restaurant Industry be Among the First to Show Signs of Recovery?

TUESDAY, APR 20, 2021

As large parts of the United States begin tentatively emerging from a year of economic hibernation, a thriving restaurant industry will be among the most visible signs of recovery. Thousands of dining establishments were shuttered during the global COVID-19 pandemic, with millions of restaurant workers furloughed, laid off, or required to work considerably fewer hours at much greater risk.

A Social Explorer analysis of Census data compiled by Easy Analytic Software Inc. based on restaurant and bar employment found New York City had the greatest concentration of dining establishment employees in the nation, followed by Washington, D.C., and its suburb of Fairfax City, Va.; New Orleans; and San Francisco.

The Retail Price Index is measured in relation to a neutral level of 100. Index values above 100 indicate that key industry indicators are in a period of expansion, while index values below 100 represent a period of contraction for key industry indicators.
