Small Farms Across the United States

MONDAY, JAN 17, 2022

Even as they continue to vanish, small family farms have been held out as the best of American agriculture. Barely 13 percent of U.S. farms have fewer than 10 acres, according to a Social Explorer analysis of the latest Census of Agriculture.

Almost two-thirds of Hawaii’s 7,328 farms are on plots smaller than 10 acres; Arizona, with 49.4 percent of farms on less than 10 acres, ranked second, followed by Alaska, with 43.2 percent of small farms. Only 571 of North Dakota’s 26,364 farms are on less than 10 acres, followed by South Dakota (4.1 percent) and Kansas (4.6 percent).
