Income Inequality Across the U.S.

Eight of the 10 most unequal metro areas in the U.S. are located east of the Mississippi River, according to the 2019 American Community Survey. Meridian, Miss., has the most unequal income distribution in the nation; on a scale of 0 to 1, with 1 meaning that all income is concentrated in the hands of a single individual, its Gini coefficient is 0.54. The most equal place in the U.S? It’s Hinesville, Ga., with a Gini of 0.38.
