Change in White Population, 2010-20

WEDNESDAY, JAN 26, 2022

The declining percentage of white, non-Hispanic Americans over the last decade may have been one of the biggest stories from the 2020 Census, but the decline was hardly uniform. There were 5 million fewer non-Hispanic white Americans in 2020 than a decade earlier — a 2.6 percent decline.

A Social Explorer analysis of recently released Census data, however, finds that the percentage of white Americans actually grew in 682 of the nation's 3,143 counties. The number of white Americans even increased in traditionally minority counties such as Maricopa, Ariz. (5.2 percent); New York, N.Y. (4.2 percent); and Bexar, Texas (3.2 percent).

The largest percentage increase, 116 percent, was reported in McKenzie County, N.D., in the heart of the oil-rich Williston Basin. Hudspeth County, in far West Texas, registered a 74 percent increase in white Americans, and La Salle County in south Texas had the third-highest jump in whites at 64 percent. Use Social Explorer’s award-winning, customizable tools to see the number of white, non-Hispanic Americans in your county.
