Fewer than 1.5 million Americans live in nursing homes, according to a Social Explorer analysis of newly released 2015-19 American Community Survey data. Despite the relatively small number – less than 0.5 percent of the total population – the largest percentages are concentrated in sparsely populated, rural states that are primarily in the Great Plains, creating challenges for healthcare workers attempting to vaccinate the nation’s most vulnerable residents against a potentially lethal coronavirus.
Four of the five states with the greatest percentage of nursing home residents – North Dakota (0.9 percent), South Dakota (0.8 percent), Iowa (0.8 percent), and Missouri (0.7 percent) – form a contiguous block stretching from the Canadian border to south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
