Widowed Population Across the U.S.

There haven't been many silver linings in the coronavirus pandemic department, but amid heart-rending photos of Americans unable to visit elderly, ailing family members, here's one: The 10 counties with the highest percentages of widowed people have seen barely 50 reports of infection and just one death. Only Jefferson County, Miss., where 13 percent of adults are widowed, had a significant number of infections (40). Kent County, Texas — where 17.6 percent of adults are widowed, more than any other county in the nation — had no infections; in fact, five of the U.S. counties with the highest percentage of widowed people are in Texas, and none reported a coronavirus infection.
