NY Times Tracks BLM Protests Across U.S. Using Social Explorer

Since May 26 — barely one day after a Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd — millions of Americans have taken to the streets to protest police attitudes toward people of color. Even amid a pandemic that's killed more than 100,000 Americans, protests have raged across the nation.

The New York Times compiled a list of more than 2,000 places where protests occurred, using Social Explorer's interactive tool and demographic data to identify locations ranging from Camden, Maine (95 percent white) to Kailua, Hawaii (73 percent minority).

The front page story also used Social Explorer data to display median household incomes and the protest locations where the population is more than 95 percent white. As the issue continues to draw the attention of millions of Americans, Social Explorer will continue to provide data that shed light on demographic, crime, and law enforcement issues.
