The percentage of U.S. households led by a single mother remained more or less constant during the last decade, according to a Social Explorer analysis of newly released 2015-19 American Community Survey data. About 1 in 8 U.S. households is led by a woman without a husband.
Despite the steady numbers, almost three dozen counties reported triple-digit increases in the percentage of single-mother households. All except two – Putnam County, in north-central Illinois, and Owsley County, Ky., one of the poorest counties in the nation – were located west of the Mississippi River.
