Biggest Relative Increase in Coronavirus Infections Include Major College Campuses

THURSDAY, SEP 10, 2020

Eight of the 10 metro areas with the biggest relative increase in coronavirus infections over the last two weeks include major college campuses, according to a Social Explorer analysis of New York Times data.

Huntsville, Texas, home to Sam Houston State University and a major state prison has had the largest increase of 8.8 new cases per 1,000 people. Oxford, Miss., home to the University of Mississippi, was third (5.3 per 1,000). Athens, Ga., which hosts the University of Georgia, followed (5.1). The only two metros where cases were growing rapidly without the assistance of a college campus were second-ranked Rio Grande City, Texas (5.4), and eighth-ranked Palestine, Texas (4.6).
